How Do They Do It?
Posted by Jason on December 13, 2007
Disclaimer: The following entry has absolutely nothing to do with some of the situations that have arisen lately between some members of the SolidWorks Community and SolidWorks Corporation. This entry is based entirely on a conversation that I had with my boss this morning concerning some of these thoughts.
How does a large software company, whether it be SolidWorks Corp. (which triggered these thoughts) or Microsoft or Autodesk, handle keeping as many consumers or users happy as possible. This seems like it could and would be an unconquerable issue to try and tackle. With a software company like SolidWorks the users are from such a wide range of industries that it seems like there would be way to many variations of users that are needing different features. When you are able to submit enhancement requests as SolidWorks accepts from its users I can only imagine how many different areas people are looking for enhancements in. What seems like an absolutely necessary enhancement to a machine designer might seem like a unnecessary change to someone who is using the software for product design and vice versa. I am extremely curious how the people at SolidWorks handle all of these requests, are they prioritized or do they just pick out which ones they see as a beneficial enhancement to the software’s function. I hope that maybe I will be able to talk to some of these people at SolidWorks World this year and get some answers so that I can do a follow up post at a later time. Until then I can only imagine what kind of a mess this could possibly be.

Tis The Season!
Posted by Jason on December 6, 2007
With each completed day we get 1 day closer to packing our bags and heading west to sunny San Diego for SolidWorks World 2008. There have been more and more resources popping up around the SolidWorks Community that have to deal SolidWorks World. Check out these resources to find out what SolidWorks has awaiting you in San Diego and what other SolidWorks World attendees have planned for the end of January.
- SolidWorks World Agenda - This is a great way to see what breakout sessions are available for you this year.
- SolidWorks World 2008 Conference Program - SolidWorks recently released the conference program for this years event. The program includes short biographies on the keynote speakers along with descriptions on the breakout sessions that will be available to all attendees.
- SolidWorks World 2008 Podcast Series - This will be a great place to come hear some of the presenters and long time attendees share with us their feelings about SolidWorks World. They will also highlight some exciting and unique topics that you can learn about this year. The podcast series has already started off with a bang by having an interview with Jeff Ray, CEO, SolidWorks Corporation that shares his feelings about this years SolidWorks World.
- SolidMentor SWW 2008 Forum - Here is a place to share the plans that you have made. Let people know when you are arriving, where you are planning on staying and when you are leaving. This will be a good opportunity to maybe set up a late night meeting with someone that you have chatted with throughout the year in other SolidWorks forums.
If you haven’t decided yet whether you are attending this year or not or if you need a little additional help convincing the management at your company to send you this year you can use 1-3 from the list above for your own use or for the proposal to hand to your bosses. Whatever you use the above list for, BE AWARE, it will get you extremely excited to head west and be part of the greatest CAD community of users there is, SolidWorks users.
