Yesterday I took the show on the road and had an absolute GREAT day! I left cold West Michigan around 7:45 am and started my trek to Evanston, Illinois which is just north of Chicago. After an uneventful travel I arrived in warmer (not warm but warmer than West Michigan) around 10:45 am West Michigan time which is 9:45 am Chicago time.
I spent the day meeting and training with Matthew Cummins from TactonWorks. For those of you who are not familiar with TactonWorks, it is a Certified SolidWorks Gold Partner design automation software that includes its own solver engine. This solver engine is what sets it apart from the majority of the other design automation add-ins that SolidWorks has partnered with. Our company has purchased TactonWorks and I am currently in the process of setting it up to work with our products and design techniques. I am having a lot of fun with it and I am hoping to follow my implementation of TactonWorks right here at RockSolid Perspective. If you are at all interested in finding out more about the software check out their web site here or drop me a comment or email and I will get you in contact with Matthew Cummins.
After a great day of training Matthew and we headed out to the Chicago SolidWorks User Group (CSUG) meeting which was held at the Des Plaines campus of Oakton Community College. This was my first time attending a CSUG meeting and Denny Bahl was a gracious host. Denny and Steven Slowik did a great job of putting this meeting together. It was attended by roughly 30-35 users and they were all treated to a great presentation by Rick Chin (SolidWorks Corporation) on the history and abilities of FeatureXpert. He did a tremendous job of tying in a multitude of ideas that all led to the realization and development of FeatureXpert. Along with meeting Rick for the first time I also had the pleasure of meeting Ed Eaton for the first time in person. It was great to finally introduce myself and get to talk to Ed. All in all this meeting was great; it was well run, well attended and included some great discussions and networking. Denny is doing a tremendous job with this group and I highly encourage you if you are within a reasonable driving distance of Chicago to attend the next meeting that the CSUG offers. You can check out their schedule on their website here.
After the user group meeting I headed back to West Michigan arriving home around 1:00 am. It was well worth my travels and I hope to make that trip again sometime in the hopefully not too distant future. Thanks to everyone who made this day worth the trip to Chicago.

Next week Friday (November 7, 2008) there will be a first for the SolidWorks community in the state of Michigan. A joint meeting is going to be held between the West Michigan SolidWorks Group and the Eastern Michigan SolidWorks User Group on the campus of Michigan State University at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory (NSCL).
Dan Bovinich, leader of the EMSWUG, has done an unbelievable job of setting this meeting up and was gracious enough to invite the users of the WMSWUG to join him and his group in East Lansing, Michigan. I am really looking forward to this meeting and the opportunity to network with SolidWorks users from the east side of the state. If you are going to be within driving distance of the Michigan State campus on November 7 I highly suggest you think about attending. The meeting is going to consist of a “What’s New in SolidWorks 2009″ presentation and then a tour of the laboratory. Below you will find a complete agenda for the upcoming meeting.
Now you are probably asking yourself, what is the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory? I cannot give you a good answer to this question; I am hoping that after next week Friday I will be able to tell you in depth what it is all about. All I can do now is tell you to visit their website and take a look for yourself. I do know however that they use SolidWorks for their design work and have been extremely generous enough to invite us all out for a big meeting and tour. I will be sure to post about this meeting next weekend after I get home and let you know all about it in case you can’t attend the event yourself.
Schedule for November 7, 2008
- 12:30 – 1:30 Doors Open, Luncheon Starts
- 1:30 – 3:30 “What’s New in SolidWorks 2009″ Presentation by Darin Grosser, DASI Solutions
- 3:30 – 4:30 Break, Networking

- 4:15 – 5:45 A Professional Tour Through The Cyclotron

Click here for a parking map.
If you would like to attend and would also like to take your kid/kids you will need to fill out the permission form included in this informational package (includes tour guide, campus map and permission form).
If you have any additional questions please feel free to contact me and I will try to help you out in any way that I can. Hope to see you there!

Yesterday I made the just under 3 hour trip to the east side of Michigan and attended the EMSWUG meeting in Troy, MI which is just north of Detroit. Dan Bovinich, the group leader and honorable mention for User Group Leader of the Year at SolidWorks World 2008, did a wonderful job setting this event up and keeping it moving on schedule. There was roughly 50 attendees at this meeting which was held at the beautiful Automation Alley building. Attendees were treated to great lunch, a lot of networking opportunities and 2 presentations that were given by an AE at each of the 2 resellers here in the Wolverine state.
Dan led the meeting off by doing a quick 8 picture slide show of some of the things that were featured and seen at SolidWorks World 2008 in San Diego, CA. This was good as it was a quick way to possibly wet the appetite of some users that may be interested in attending the event next year in Orlando, FL. Next, Dan did a brief polling of the attendees as to which version of SolidWorks they were running and what operating system they were running it on. I found it very interesting how many people where still using SolidWorks 2007 as their #1 CAD program and had not upgraded to SolidWorks 2008 yet. Dan then introduced the first presentation and presenter of the afternoon. Jon Benavides from Fisher/Unitech did a presentation titled "90 Tips in 90 Minutes". This was a presentation that he had taken and modified from someone that had presented it at SolidWorks 2007. His presentation offered a lot of information in what seemed to be a short amount of time. There were definitely things that were shown however that peaked a lot of peoples attention because I noticed quite a bit of note taking during his presentation. The tips and tricks style presentations in my eyes are always good because they are easy things to take back the workplace and start using the next day.
After a short 15 minute break Dan introduced the 2nd presenter of the afternoon which was John MacArthur from DASI Solutions. John is also known for his 3rd place finish in the reseller category of Model Mania this past year at SolidWorks World. John did a presentation titled "Die Design Using SolidWorks". John showed how he created a fully functioning progressive die in SolidWorks and he also highlighted the many different aspects of die design during his presentation. After he gave a brief overview of the different areas included in die design he showed a fully animated movie of his progressive die in action. He accomplished this by using many configurations in his assembly that highlighted each step in the forming process. John did a nice job with this presentation and I saw a lot of nodding heads and could see some wheels turning for different people when John began to show how he created the animation of his die. John finished his presentation by showing some of the different animations that he has created over the years, going as far back as 2001.
One thing that I love about the SolidWorks software, user group meetings and SolidWorks World is that you can watch a presentation that is the farthest thing away from the industry that you are in but there is a good chance that if you are really paying attention you will still pull something from that presentation that can be implemented in your area of expertise.
So now I guess I have to wait until May to attend my next user group meeting which will be the WMSWUG meeting on May 13, 2008 in Zeeland, Michigan. Lenny Kikstra and Mike Garvelink are currently on tap to present at this meeting so if you are in the area make sure to mark it on your calendar as a must attend event.
