make the flyout toolbars work for you

shortcut toolbar A couple of weeks ago I read an awesome post about how to customize the default SolidWorks Flyout toolbars that was written by Randy Simmons who is an Application Engineer at 3DVision Technologies.

Now I use Flyout toolbars almost exclusively on my Shortcut Bar so that I can pack as many commands into that tool as possible.  Well, today I was creating some drawings and needed access to the Dowel Pin Symbol.  I checked out my Annotations Flyout and what did I find, well almost everything BUT the command that I needed.  I know I can access this through Tools > Inserts > Annotations > Dowel Pin Symbol but that requires me to leave the area that I am working in more than what I would really like.  So what did I do?  I used Randy’s post to help me customize the Annotations Flyout.

To check out for yourself how to do it follow this link to the 3DVision Technologies blog and see what Randy has to say.  Enjoy!

I’m not sure of the “name” of this toolbar so bear with me as I explain my question. When you’re working in an assembly and you click on any part a toolbar appears automatically on the screen, is there any way to add commands to that toolbar? I’d love to add the hole wizard to that pop-up toolbar.

    Thanks,

    Brian

    brian,

first off thanks for the comment.

the pop-up toolbar that you are referring to i believe is the context toolbar. unfortunately this toolbar is uncustomizable. the only work around would be to add the hole wizard to your shortcut bar (“s” key by default) and use it from there.

maybe you could submit an enhancement request to make the context toolbars customizable because i have heard from a lot of users that would like this customizable.

    Jason,

I know this doesn’t haven anything to do with the above post but I didn’t see a link where I could just send you a question in general…

I’m running SW 2009 64bit on a Dell 64 bit machine with 16GB of ram, but I don’t ever see more than 4GB of ram being used. Is there a setting somewhere that will make the “left over” 12 GB of ram available to SW to use? It’s driving me nuts that I have all this ram, and when the machine bogs down it’s only taking advantage of 4 GB of ram.

Thanks in advance for any tips on this.

    Brian
